How do you verbs notes from a laptop to a desktop?

I am using Windows XP as my operating system, plan to purchase a laptop, but Vista is presently the current operating systems in unsullied laptops. Can I transfer information using the usb 2 port between the computers. I could not locate any information on Windows XP help, I find their lend a hand usually is not much help at adjectives.

You can verbs data between the two computers using an Ethernet cord and adapter, not USB.
